Salon XL & MTV's MADE!
June 2011
Salon XL Color & Design group, Ann Arbor’s premier color salon, had the honor of performing hair coloring, cutting & styling services for Emma Hamstra, the latest candidate on MTV’s MADE, whose episode aired on Friday, June 24th, 2011. Emma, a student at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, wants to become a rapper, and MADE helped her discover her dream. Emma’s MADE experience included work with a rap mentor and coach, a new outfit, and – of course – a new hairstyle!
Salon XL was contacted about performing a “beauty make-over” for Emma as part of her transformation into a female rapper. Shannon Serenko, a stylist at Salon XL, consulted with Emma and her mentor, Chavonn Bigham, about what her “rapper style” should be. Shannon gave Emma blended highlights with Wella’s Blondor Lightening Powder, and a couple of rich burgundy lowlights using Wella’s Koleston Perfect haircolor. Her hair was left long, but was given some layers to create movement and depth. It was styled with Kerastase’s Chroma Thermique to protect it from the heat; Oribe’s Soft Lacquer to give her hair great shine and hold; and Superfine hairspray as a finishing touch!
Emma performed at Pioneer High School the very next day for all of her peers. Using material that she had written herself, Emma’s dream of becoming a rapper came true – with a little help from the ladies at Salon XL!
